Coping With Morning Sickness While Caring for Small Children
Coping with morning sickness can be hard to deal with, but it\’s even more difficult when you have other young children that you have to take care of. In order to survive through this rough time, you\’ll have to find a way to keep the other children occupied long enough to get some rest and hopefully feel better.
Not only does morning sickness make you feel poorly, but you\’re probably also struggling with a wide range of emotions and fatigue. All of these things can make dealing with your young children a challenge. Accept the fact that these are normal feelings for a pregnant woman and that they will come to pass.
If you absolutely must lay down for awhile, just make sure that your children are nearby. For example, if you want to lay down on your bed, clear a spot for them on the floor in your bedroom so that they can play. Or, if it’s easier for them to play in the family room, take a quick nap in a recliner. For very young children, it\’s probably best to go into their bedroom and rest on the floor in order to shut the door and keep them contained.
Now, pick some busy tasks for them because you want to try to keep them occupied for longer than 5 minutes at a time. Some great ideas include:
Jigsaw Puzzles – Although it\’s great if you can find one with lots of pieces, make sure it’s not too difficult or you’ll only frustrate your child.
Coloring books – get a variety of them and make sure you have enough coloring crayons to keep their interest.
Play-Doh – One of the messier choices, but it’s a great choice for keeping them busy for awhile.
Cars – Grab a bucket and let them loose on the floor.
Books – Lay down and read to your kids if you are able to. If not, let them ”read” to you.
Movies – Buy a few movies that are family friendly and play them while you get some rest.
Coping with morning sickness can be very miserable and trying to care for your children can definitely be a huge challenge. Keeping them busy with various activities while keeping them close to you can help you at least catch a quick nap. If none of these things work, you might want to try to find someone to care for them, even if just for a short time.
